CO2 news: the good, the bad, the good

The news on atmospheric CO2 levels and Climate Change is very much a roller coaster.

Here is an important update.

Good news

·    President Joe Biden acknowledges Climate Change -- unlike Donald Trump -- and has made 'going green' a national US priority.

·  Next UN Climate Change Conference is the end of this month in Glasgow, UK.

Bad news

Bad news re: renewable energy rarely makes mainstream newspapers, TV and other media.

An oil spill a week ago off California from an underground seabed pipe – caused by a boat anchor – gets headline coverage as it fits the ‘mantra’ of ’bad’ fossil fuels.

But when there is a problem –a extremely serious problem – with solar and/or wind energy, mass media today ‘hide’ in silence.

Only a few dare to tell the truth, such as Eric Reguly’s “There is no quick fix for Europe's self-manufactured energy crisis’"(Globe & Mail, Oct. 9, 2021 B7).

·         Europe now relies on Wind and Solar for 30% of its energy.   But this year, only 10%  -- yes, just 10% !!! -- has come from there ‘green sources’.  Winds have not been gusting across the North Sea and the sun has been hidden by extensive cloud cover day after day.

With such a collapse of electricity from so-called ‘renewables’, Europe is relying on extra natural gas from Russia to keep the lights on, power factories, heat homes and recharge electric vehicles.

Put simply, Europe's world leading shift to solar and especially wind 'energy' has been a 'dud' this year.

So don't be surprised if they go back to burning wood in fireplaces and reopening their massive coal reserves -- as China is doing.

The lesson is:  NEVER, EVER RELY ON THE VAGARIES OF WEATHER TO FUEL YOUR ECOMONY AND LIFE.

PS:  The prices for energy – i.e., natural gas – has skyrocketed in this situation and the cost of heating homes, factories, transportation and FOOD are all set to reach new, possibly all-time, levels.

So inflation will jump across Europe as a result.

·   The Gulf Stream is getting noticeably weaker.   About 5% over the last 20 years.

This is also major news kept under wraps:  because the Gulf Steam brings warm, equatorial waters northward.  It allows the East Coast of the USA to be warmer, and it is the reason Great Britain and all of Europe have much milder winters than comparable ‘frozen north’ Canada or Siberia. All share a 50* to 60* north latitude.

Good news

CO2 is not only essential for all life to continue on this planet: as the key atmospheric component needed by trees, shrubs, grass and all green plant life to exist, i.e., to gain ‘food’ sugars via photosynthesis, but governments, companies and Start Up chemists are finally realizing how important CO2 is to all kinds of ‘essential’ human needs.

Put simply, it is too valuable to let 'escape' into the atmosphere.

Yes, too useful to waste.

FOOD and MEDICINE

As highlighted in The Scotsman[i], the government of the UK is currently paying a fertilizer company to make more fertilizer because its process generated CO2 which it captures and stores.

The company supplies 60% of Britain’s CO2 market.

·  CO2 is vitial in the FOOD industry.

Bedside adding bubbles to soft drinks, ‘fizzy’ alcohol and                   similar drinks CO2 is essential for     food preservation during            shipping and shelf life:

“A key component in controlled atmosphere storage of fruit and vegetables, carbon dioxide is used in concentrations along with oxygen and nitrogen to regulate the temperature and humidity of food products during storage and transportation."

"It is also used to extend the shelf life of dairy and baked products by deterring mould in baked goods and some cheeses, leading to concerns that supermarkets could see less quality produce on their shelves in the coming weeks and potential shortages of some products.”

·   CO2 is also essential in the medical field:

ü  in the sterile transportation of medicines and other medical supplies

ü  during surgery in body cavities

ü  used to remove warts, moles  and skintag

·   It is crutial in ‘humane’ animal slaughtering.

Each year, in the UK alone, approximately 2.6 million cattle, 10 million pigs, 14.5 million sheep and lambs are processed for food.[ii]

NEW INNOVATIONS

As governments try to reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere with Carbon taxes, companies and clever chemists are rushing to find ways to ‘reuse’ CO2 emissions and ‘make a profit’.

The  Globe &Mail , July31, 2021, had a major story on five (5) Canadian startups who have come up with new ways to ‘reuse’ CO2 emissions.

§  CO2 Gro Inc.

§  Carbonova Corp.

§  CleanO2 Carbon capture Technologies Inc.

§  Hyperion Global Energy Corp.

§  Carbon Upcycling Technologies.

And certainly the USA, Europe, UK and the rest have comparable ‘new solutions’ under research and development.

Aramco, the Saudi Arabia Arabian Oil Company, has a US patent for a new process for making concrete faster – using CO2.  The process reduces cure time from 28 days to just 3 days.

The process, if used world wide would save 246 million tons of CO2 emissions each year – equal to the emissions of 58 million cars!      (Time Magazine, Oct. 11-18, 2021 double issue, p.8 ad.)

CO2 is too valuable an asset and ‘gift’ from Gaia.
